CAW Workers Adjustment Centre The CAW Local 127 and 35 Workers Adjustment Centre is a combined effort between CAW Local 127 and the Government of Ontario. The objective of the Workers’ Adjustment Centre is to help laid-off and displaced workers adjust with the transition from Navistar to other employment. The Workers Adjustment Centre is accessible to all Local 127 and 35 members plus Navistar non-represented employees. Members can come to the Workers Adjustment Centre to file their unemployment documents on-line, update resumes and receive assistance conducting job searches. What the Adjustment Centre offers goes beyond that. The Workers Adjustment Centre sets up work shops, offers training opportunities and is a wealth of information about government services available to unemployed workers. The Centre is managed by a committee made up of an independent community chairperson, Centre coordinator, MTCU (Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities) Representative and 5 volunteer committee persons. The Centre is operated on a daily basis by the full time coordinator and 2 or 3 Peer workers (rotated form a pool of about 25 Peer workers)
What is an Adjustment Centre?
An Adjustment Centre is a Government funded
mini-employment resource centre where the services and activities of a
committee are based. The Adjustment Centre offers a focus on meeting the
adjustment needs of the affected workers. It has a strong commitment to
a shared self-help approach using trained Peer Helpers and volunteers.
It provides a place for laid off workers to conduct their job search and
a location for workshops and referral to counseling services. It also
provides a location for adjustment committee meetings and activities.
The Adjustment Centre refers workers to existing services offered by
government, public institutions and community agencies; it does not
attempt to duplicate them. You may ask why now? We have been through troubled
times before and we sure could have used this centre then. Well we can't
go back in time; but we can use this opportunity to the fullest now. Your Centre will have computers with internet access
available to laid off Navistar employees. We will be able to refer our
members to the multitude of services available in our community that
many of us didn't know existed.
This will be a place to network
What is a Peer Helper?
The purpose of the Peer Helper is to assist workers who have lost their job due to a closure or downsizing by their employer. These workers usually have many questions and need information before they can make a decision about what to do next. The Peer Helper is there to help the laid off workers find the information they need. Make referrals to agencies and various community resources and organizations that can help workers who lose their jobs (e.g. personal or family counseling, financial counseling, food banks). This includes making initial contacts with agencies and being available for follow-up should the need arise.
