WHAT IS SCALE?
SCALE is a “network of networks” of artists and organizations working at the intersection of culture and
climate in Canada. SCALE was born in the spring of 2021 when a group of dedicated arts workers seeded
the idea for this new organization, which then incorporated as a non-profit in December, 2021.
WHY SCALE?
The urgency of the climate and ecological crisis demands that the arts and culture sector activate its
unique capacity for creative expression in service of a livable future for all. In this critical decade of
action, this requires a clear focus on climate justice and a genuine transformation in values: from
consumerism and extraction to stewardship and regeneration.
OUR MANDATE:
To foster a coordinated, artful and impactful response to the climate emergency from Canada’s arts and
culture sector.
OUR MISSION:
SCALE serves as a national hub to develop strategy, align activities, and build the leadership capacity of Canada’s arts and culture sector in the climate emergency. SCALE is driven by the conviction that inclusive, comprehensive, and far-reaching collaboration, both within and beyond our sector, will propel our creative work towards the decisive tipping points of cultural transformation.
