Explore Vancouver’s newest wetland for a special Earth Day workshop on the role wetlands play in climate change mitigation!
About this Event
Did you know wetlands store more carbon than forests and help shield coastal communities from extreme weather? Wetlands are areas of land saturated in water either permanently or seasonally. The plants that live in the shallow waters are adapted to highly saturated soils and together create a highly productive ecosystem that plays a number of unique and critical roles in the environment.
Join EYA educator Mehar Imran for a special Earth Day workshop on the role wetlands play in climate change mitigation! In this workshop we’ll explore the newly created Strathcona Wetland to learn about this ecosystem and its crucial relationships to plants and wildlife. We’ll then discuss how wetlands can support climate change mitigation and adaptation efforts. This will be followed by an interactive group activity, a short question session, and end with a mingle where snacks and beverages will be provided.
Note: Wetland pathways are rough and unpaved and would be difficult for those in wheelchairs.
About the facilitator: Mehar Imran (she/hers) is a first-generation Pakistani settler, born and raised on the traditional unceded territories of the Katzie, Semiahmoo, and Kwantlen Nations. In her adolescence she found a deep fascination with plants which led her to pursue an undergraduate degree in Urban Forestry at UBC. Mehar is an advocate for community empowerment and equity and bringing people closer to nature and its gifts.
