Lin Snelling’s performance, writing and teaching is based in the qualities improvisation can offer as it applies to dance, theatre, visual art and somatic practice. She toured the world extensively as a performer with Carbone 14 and worked with many improvisation ensembles. As Professor at the University of Alberta she is presently teaching dance, experiential anatomy and composition and is Coordinator of the MFA in Theatre Practice program. She received a McCalla Professorship in 2019 from the University of Alberta for a new collective creation, A Sounding Line. Her recent dance collaborations are Entrances with David Gagnon Walker and Tori Morrison, eva as part of StageLab, The Liminal with Brian Webb, anything goes: GWG Dance in 17 parts with Gerry Morita, and Versing with musician/composers Michael Reinhart, Jeremi Roy, David Ryshpan and lighting designer Yan Lee Chan. She works with Montreal choreographer Tedi Tafel and was part of Crying in Public, Life World, Calendar and Everyday. Her collaboration Performing Book with visual artist Shelagh Keeley happened at the Edmonton Art Gallery, MoMA, the Power Plant/Toronto, and the VAG/Vancouver. My focus as an artist is to create environmental art that roots nature into our everyday urban experience. I work across diverse mediums, blending textile arts, natural materials, performance, photography, and most recently film, to create ephemeral installations and social interventions.
Sam Rose Phillips is a filmmaker and writer based in Yuułuʔiłʔatḥ Territory. She focuses her lens on human-wildlife stories and their ecological & cultural significance to coastal communities. Sam specializes in off-grid, remote storytelling both from land and on the water, spending the first 5 years of her career as a one-woman film crew. Framing narratives alongside NGOs like Conservancy Hornby Island, Sea Shepherd, North Coast Cetacean Society, Clayoquot Action, and Cetus Research & Conservation Society, has instilled in
her a dedication to ethical filmmaking practices and communicating with clarity. She is currently directing a documentary about coexisting with wildlife.
Kelly Andres is a research based artist of settler origin. She has produced installations, performances and sensorial experiences that blend cosmologies and ecologies. Andres recently completed a practice based Ph.D in Fine Arts at Concordia University, Montréal, titled Radicle Assemblages (2020). Her current research intertwines ecological art practices, plant studies, performative placemaking, co-creative community/urban planning, and experiential approaches for multi-species interactions. Recent exhibitions include Particle + Wave, Calgary, Les yeux dans l’eau, Foreman Art Gallery of Bishop University in Sherbrooke, Sandstone City, The Lougheed House, Calgary, The Garden of Speculations, articule, Montréal, le Centre des arts actuels Skol, Montréal, La Maison des arts de Laval, Laval. Andres’s past work has been generously supported by the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec, the Alberta Foundation for the Arts and the Canada Council for the Arts.
Marie LeBlanc is a self-taught multidisciplinary artist. Originally from Northern Manitoba, she lived in Winnipeg before recently relocating to Alberta. Living with Environmental Illness means that for LeBlanc, the toxicities of indoor housing have become intolerable due to Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (MCS), Electromagnetic Hypersensitivity and Toxic Mold Exposure. To ease her symptoms, she travels to the U.S. desert in the winter months in a cargo van adapted for safe housing. LeBlanc has taken on a seasonally nomadic lifestyle, following the warm weather patterns that enable her to be outdoors.
Born in Tkaronto (Toronto) to Chilean political refugees, Ayelen’s first language was dance which has matured through radical explorations of movement as powerful tools for change and transformation. A multifaceted dancer, filmmaker, activist and community weaver, her work in the world is to lead from the heart and articulate connection.
Kristin Gyrlevich Singh is a multidisciplinary community-engaged environmental artist and activist graciously living on the unceded and unsurrendered territories of the Wǝlastǝkewiyik/Wolastoqiyik (Maliseet), Mi’kmaq/Mi’kmaw and Peskotomuhkati. Her arts practice is dedicated to social change in the areas of environmental sustainability and gender equality. She is an emerging visual artist and poet as well as a song writer. Her aim is to foster an interconnected relationship between our waterways, our lands and our people and to inspire others to find harmony within themselves and the environment. Her belief that the message is more important than the medium has led to using all natural paints, dyes, fungi and bacteria to create biodegradable environmentally friendly art work. It is with these works that she hopes to convey that it is the ideas communicated in our art that foster change that must remain. Alongside this practice , Kristin has worked in the non-profit and public sectors as a board member, volunteer librarian, art therapy leader, gallery owner and manager. She opened Under the Tree Art Gallery in 2020 to give local artists a venue to showcase their work during the COVID-19 pandemic and to help engage the community with art and the environment.
