Miriam Fabijan

We are an integral part of nature’s delicate and beautiful balance. Through several of my drawing series I have sought to represent that balance, between the landscape and myself. This includes the disruption of that balance and its effect. These series were called “LAND_BODY”, “When Water Falls” and “-by length and by depth- “.

As a visual artist I am ever conscious about the materials I use in my practice. I am currently working towards choosing more natural materials that can be used and reused, and eventually be naturally returned to the earth without disruption.

Kelly Andres

Kelly Andres is a research based artist of settler origin. She has produced installations, performances and sensorial experiences that blend cosmologies and ecologies. Andres recently completed a practice based Ph.D in Fine Arts at Concordia University, Montréal, titled Radicle Assemblages (2020). Her current research intertwines ecological art practices, plant studies, performative placemaking, co-creative community/urban planning, and experiential approaches for multi-species interactions. Recent exhibitions include Particle + Wave, Calgary, Les yeux dans l’eau, Foreman Art Gallery of Bishop University in Sherbrooke, Sandstone City, The Lougheed House, Calgary, The Garden of Speculations, articule, Montréal, le Centre des arts actuels Skol, Montréal, La Maison des arts de Laval, Laval. Andres’s past work has been generously supported by the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec, the Alberta Foundation for the Arts and the Canada Council for the Arts.

Marie LeBlanc

Marie LeBlanc is a self-taught multidisciplinary artist. Originally from Northern Manitoba, she lived in Winnipeg before recently relocating to Alberta. Living with Environmental Illness means that for LeBlanc, the toxicities of indoor housing have become intolerable due to Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (MCS), Electromagnetic Hypersensitivity and Toxic Mold Exposure. To ease her symptoms, she travels to the U.S. desert in the winter months in a cargo van adapted for safe housing. LeBlanc has taken on a seasonally nomadic lifestyle, following the warm weather patterns that enable her to be outdoors.

Autumn Whiteway (Night Singing Woman)

Autumn Whiteway (Night Singing Woman) is a Saulteaux/Métis visual artist, traditional craftworker, curator and archaeologist based in Calgary, Alberta. She explores Indigenous themes from a contemporary perspective through painting, digital art, and photography. Her painting and digital art is primarily focused on the heavily symbolic Woodland Style of Indigenous art, while her photographic practice is used as a form of activism to highlight Indigenous issues. Additionally, she makes traditional crafts such as fish scale artwork, spirit dolls, dreamcatchers and medicine bags. Her work has been exhibited at locations such as Arts Commons, cSpace King Edward, ATB Branch for Arts and Culture, and Calgary Public Library. Her curatorial work focuses on elevating the voices of Indigenous creatives through a series of Indigenous focused exhibitions. She holds an M.A. in Anthropology from the University of Manitoba (2017), a B.Sc. in Archaeology, and a B.A. in Greek and Roman Studies.

Eveline Kolijn

Eveline Kolijn is a printmaker and installation artist. Her interest in natural history and concern for the environment were fostered by growing up in the Caribbean, where she experienced both the beauty and demise of coral reefs. Eveline received a MA in cultural anthropology from the Leiden University in the Netherlands in 1986 and a BFA from the Alberta College of Art+ Design in 2008 including the Governor General’s Award for academic achievement. She has participated in national and international exhibitions and residencies, public art projects and community engagement. She has been published in various scientific publications. She is an instructor at the Alberta University of the Arts School of Continuing Education. In 2018, she joined the Energy Futures Lab as a Fellow and in 2019, she received the AUArts Alumni Legacy award.

Deltra Powney

My visual language is interdisciplinary, informed by placemaking and a consciousness of what we have come to understand about our being in the world. I develop these thoughts through reading texts about human/environmental relationships, and immersive field research experiences. I focus on riparian zones where I sketch, paint and photograph micro-environments. I further explore the relational enchantment I have with these spaces in my studio through drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture and assemblage.

Hannah Gelderman

Hannah Gelderman (she/her) is a settler of Dutch descent, living in the region called Amiskwaciwâskahikan, also known as Edmonton, Alberta. She works in the arts as an educator, illustrator and visual artist. She completed her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Art and Design at the University of Alberta in 2012, and then began to work with a variety of organizations to develop and facilitate art programs for children, youth and adults. Alongside this, Hannah is involved in the climate justice movement, to which she brings extra enthusiasm for arts-based organizing. In 2020 Hannah graduated with a Master of Education in Adult Education and Community Engagement from the University of Victoria. She focussed her research on the role of participatory visual arts in this era of climate crisis, which came together as a series of zines titled Collective Arts for Climate Justice.

Maedeh Mosaverzadeh

Maedeh Mosaverzadeh is an Iranian Visual artist based in Calgary, Canada. She received her Master of Fine Arts at the University of Calgary. Maedeh creates illustrations and animations to discuss issues surrounding plastic pollution. She explores ways in which art can evoke emotions and bring awareness about environmental issues and problems caused in our troubled age. In pursuing her endeavor for increasing general awareness about plastic pollution and reaching out to more people, Maedeh has created a social media platform called A Yellow Land. In this platform, she shares her artistic practice and ideas.

Audrey Lane Cockett

Audrey Lane Cockett is a filmmaker, artistic director, spoken word poet, ecologist, and outdoor educator based in Treaty 7 Land. Their work is rooted in wild and they are a passionate advocate for mental health awareness, love, and intersectional care for community and the natural world.
They believe in art as an avenue for learning, healing, connecting and transforming.

Melanie Kloetzel/kloetzel&co.

kloetzel&co. is a dance theatre company committed to works that span stage, site, and screen. Begun in New York City, kloetzel&co. now makes its home in Canada, where it has grown increasingly concerned with the intersection between art-making and social and environmental justice. The company’s research projects emerge from practice-as-research methodologies and result in events, workshops and encounters in theatre spaces, alternative venues, online environments, and spaces of public assembly. kloetzel&co. is particularly dedicated to artistic collaboration and interdisciplinary practices and the company enjoys fostering creative experiments with writers, filmmakers, composers, designers, visual artists, landscape designers, and musicians in each place along its choreographic journey. Award-winning films from the company have been presented across four continents, and live presentation highlights include presentations at New York’s Movement Research at the Judson Church, Danspace, and The Flea Theatre, as well as in hotels, train stations, board rooms, parking lots and gallery spaces. kloetzel&co. is directed by Melanie Kloetzel (MFA, PhD) a performance maker, scholar and educator who has created over fifty works for the company. Kloetzel is also the co-director of the art intervention collective TRAction. Kloetzel’s publications can be found in many scholarly journals as well as in her co-edited anthology Site Dance: Choreographers and the Lure of Alternative Spaces (2009), the co-authored (Re)Positioning Site Dance: Local Acts, Global Perspectives (2019), and the co-authored Covert: A Handbook, which are currently available from University Press of Florida, Intellect, and Triarchy Press, respectively. Kloetzel is Professor of Dance at the University of Calgary.
